But I’ll never get over(…coat) you.
If there’s one item you shouldn’t be paying MSRP for is coats. They’re super plentiful in thrift stores, (mainly due to the rise in popularity of the North Face style parka and LLBean’s fleece). However, here we’ll be checking out the thrifter’s favorite cousin: Military Surplus Stores.
This jacket is a French Air Force great coat that I got brand new for $15. It’s got some great details like fish-mouth lapels, epaulets and a belted back. I initially thought of getting the buttons replaced, but came around to the gold ones in the end. Still though, if you did get them changed it’d be another $20 or so. Well under $100 can get you something brand new, interesting, well cut and built to last.
And if you want a different silhouette or material, just look around! The Germans specialize in a very nipped waist and very flared skirt. Americans are more of a sack cut type great coat. There’s Pea Coats, snorkel jackets, M65’s, and on and on.
Anytime people buy some mediocre peacoat or whatever at J Crew or Polo, I figure they must be huffing glue or something.
