Q:I see you do a lot thrift shopping. How much clothes do you have? I always ask myself if I can have to many clothes. I often buy good things (thrifted) because they're nice and cheap, but when I count my shirts at 80 ... compared to other people who own maybe 20 I'm wondering if I'm crazy :D
I have less than you might think. I try to keep my collections to 1 shirt for each day in a month (1/2 year round, 1/2 seasonal), 10-12 sport coats, and then 14 or so pants, sweaters and misc coats (5-7 usually). I probably have more shoes than I should, but I’ve largely rid myself of “repeats” (I really didn’t need 3 pairs of vintage brown longwing brogues).
In general, my wardrobe is larger than absolutely necessary, but not overwhelming (and not the bespoke sets, “my closet is bigger than your closet” overwhelming). It fits in my closet (which is 1/2 taken up with my girlfriends stuff), which I think is the important part. Your wardrobe is too big if you can’t fit it into the space allocated for it.
My tie collection is a bit larger, but even there I exclusively have plaids (madras for summer, tartan for winter), florals, stripes, dots, solids/knits and some (mostly) vintage Burberry’s large scale foulards (which I find more “fun” than standard foulards) and Narragansett Beer promotional ties. I don’t have any misc patterns, paisleys, madders, etc… which keeps me from just buying everything I see.
I am working on a series of photos and commentary on how big my wardrobe is and how it functions as my “look”. But that’s a huge project (huger than I anticipated), so don’t expect it anytime soon.
