Fun fact for my readers who got here in the last 4 months. During the S/S, I have a mustache. It looks something like this.

Tastefully Off.
What can I say, it was a cold, rainy, windy day.
I look like it.
Hmmm… What else, what else… Probably, something about liking wide-ass lapels. Purple not pink OCBD (Or even my sprezzy “non-buttoned buttons” bullshit that I’m trying to pull). My too short sleeves? I could probably talk about that tie for a while. Or my new-to-me vintage raincoat. That’s plenty of topics, feel free to imagine your own commentary along one of those lines.

Vintage “Woodmere” Raincoat (with zip-in liner, which is, miraculously, still zipped in) - $7.50

Got that tie yesterday with my leather jacket, unfortunately after a day of wear, the zipper stopped working… I was glad I bought it at goodwill (and that I have access to a pricing gun to reattach the tag), but I’m always sad to have to return something.
Such are the travails of a seasoned thrifter.

Formal/Casual.
I’ve written a fair amount in the past about making your formal more casual and your casual more formal. This is a pretty good example of the latter.
The materials are more casual (moleskin, wool tie), but the cut of the trousers and the waistcoat are more formal. The tie is wool plaid, about as casual as a tie gets. The shoes are nice, but still chunky and informal (as any good longwing brogue should be).
This same outfit with olive worsted trousers, a blue spread collar shirt and a silk tie would be a formal outfit made more casual by eschewing a jacket and wearing casual shoes. Here, it’s still casual, but by no means sloppy.
Also, it’s called a waistcoat, if it doesn’t cover your waistband you’re wearing it wrong (the first pic is the worst, but the last one also shows way too much belt)

The Over/Under.
I said back here that I love overcoat weather because you essentially get to have 2 completely separate outfits. In this case I have a very severe, all navy, all dark over-layer, with a more playful, wide lapelled, electric blue under-layer. One more playful, one more serious, both at the same time. Probably the best way to have your cake, but also somehow eat your cake.
Also, I know my pants are too long in these pics. I’ve been wearing long johns which have provided enough static to hold up my pants, I went without today, and forgot my belt. Don’t worry #menswear, I would never try to stunt with my pants all baggy.

*this is a joke people, I’m joking.
While I prefer working with vibrant colors, some days, especially this late in autumn don’t lend themselves to the contrast.
Take today. 50ish and cloudy. I have a late class, but mostly it’s errands and reading/work. So it’s a casual look, with a lot of deep tones. Playing around with the navy (shirt, tie, denim jacket, scarf, socks) and olive (scarf, pants) they’re all different tones and textures so as to add some kind of visual interest.
Plus it’s a sort of playful outfit. Denim jacket with tie is one of my favorite looks, it’s casual without being sloppy, a straight front jacket is a good alternative to the standard sport-coat silhouette. The accessories are silver and gunmetal to echo the steely gray of the sky on an overcast day.
That’d be the other take away from this outfit, keep it playful. I know there’s a lot of corporate types on Tumblr that maybe can’t play around as much as someone who works in a consignment shop (and can essentially wear anything he damn well pleases), but there’s more out there than just jacket/tie/pocket square combos. Try to find them.
Thanksgiving Lookbook 3
Yay for things not loading!
(Fuck you Time Warner Cable, the internet shouldn’t go out every 5 minutes)

Off to work.
Then HALLOWEEN PARTY!
This is not my costume.
But these pants are wicked awesome, so I can see how you might be confused.

Time for tweed and scarves.
So many scarves.
I’ll try and write something on them on Monday since I leave for work in 5 minutes and never get done.
